Problem: I downloaded the Silverlight installer and installed the program on my Vista Home Premium machine. However, when I go to a website and click on a Silvelight application, I get a message telling me that I have to install Silverlight.
I have re-booted, removed/re-installed, etc. No luck. Finally got this answer from Microsoft. Hope it helps you.
1. Click the Start button, type “REGEDIT” (without quotation marks) in the Search bar, and press Enter. Please click Continue if necessary.
2. In the Registry Editor, on the left pane, navigate to the following key by expanding the plus sign (+):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AgControl.AgControl
3. Right click on “AgControl.AgControl”, click Permissions.
4. Please check if Administrators is listed in the Group and User name list. If not, please click the Add button and type “Administrators” in the open window and click OK to add this group.
5. Highlight Administrators and check on Full Control.
6. Click the Advanced button and choose the Owner tab.
7. Highlight the current user account in the list and mark the check box before Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
8. Click OK to save changes and wait for Windows Vista to transfer the ownership of all the objects.
9. Click OK again to save changes and exit the permission window.
Then, please repeat the steps above to check permissions for these keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AgControl.AgControl\CLSID
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AgControl.AgControl\CurVer
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AgControl.AgControl.1.0
I just followed all of these instructions to fix silverlight install issues. before even trying out the results, I decided to copy and save the instructions.
When trying to save the instructions in MS word, it said that I needed to reinstall MS office.
ARE YOU KIDDING?
Hoping a system restore will save me now.

I’m working with vista and i tried this but not all the files appear in the registry, i’m assuming because I am trying to install silverlight 4.0. any suggestions?
Jeremy,
Just do the same to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AgControl.AgControl.4.0 and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AgControl.AgControl.4.0\CLSID
Worked for me for Windows 7. I could run Silverlight in FF, but not IE. Now I can.
